Casino Apps Enter Amongst top Grossing for 2013

The annual chart ranking the top apps downloaded from Apple’s App Store has proven more competitive than ever during 2013. The App Store passed the 1 million apps level in October this year, the company announced, that have combined accounted for a total of 60 billion app downloads since the Play Store first opened its digital doors. However the top spot did go to a runaway winner with Candy Crush Saga crushing the competition.

iPhone and iPad users downloaded Candy Crush Saga in their droves over the course of the year. The addictive game not only proved to be immensely popular but has seemingly cracked the code of successfully monetising its success, a trick which has proven difficult in the past for the producers of popular free apps and games. The in-app purchase revenue has proven itself to be less than easy to successfully pull-off, but Candy Crush’s developers have clearly managed with the game topping the chart for the highest grossing apps as well as that for the most downloads. This was the case for both downloads and revenue on the iphone and ipad.

Candy Crush was officially crowned the most successful app of the year when Apple released the annual figures last week. Although the actual figures are not disclosed, Apple lists a “Top 10” in various categories.

In the paid app category Minecraft-pocket edition took top spot for iphones and ipads, suggesting the trend is for relatively close correlation of popularity for apps across both devices.

The charts also show that gambling and casino apps are seeing a real boom, especially for use on ipads. Five of the top 10 highest grossing apps on the iPad in 2013 were gambling-related, including DoubleDown Casino, Big Fish Casino, and Slotomania HD; with the other five were games.

Online casinos will be very happy with the growth market that tablets have opened up and we can expect to see heavy investment by software developers and casinos in mobile products throughout 2014. Which can only be good news for fans of online gaming as the competition will inevitably lead to increased quality and gameplay as the industry’s giants battle it out.
